Synopsis

Warning: This synopsis contains detailed spoilers about the plot.

Damon amuses himself by creating a nightmare in Stefan's mind in which he threatens Elena’s safety. Having decided to stay in Mystic Falls for awhile, Damon gleefully tells Stefan that the officials have announced the capture of the animal responsible for the recent attacks in town. As Stefan writes an entry in his journal, he wonders how to stop Damon without becoming a monster himself. A disagreement occurs between Jeremy and Elena regarding some family heirlooms, including a pocket watch that Elena polishes for the Founders Council heritage display. Stefan agrees to escort Elena to the Founder’s Ball. After explaining how one is ‘turned’ into a vampire, Damon teases Caroline and compels her to ask him to accompany her to the Founder’s Ball. Vicki is angered by Tyler’s indifference displayed towards her when he is with his parents. Bonnie encourages Caroline to divulge the secret that Damon revealed to her about Stefan. After his parents leave the Grill, Tyler makes amends with Vicki by asking her to the Founder’s Ball. Jeremy makes the unwelcome observation to Vicki that she had to prompt Tyler to do so. Zach angers Damon by asking why he has returned to Mystic Falls. When Stefan intervenes between the two, Zach encourages him to use vervain on Damon, which he has secretly been growing in the basement of the boardinghouse.

Tyler comes to the Gilbert home to retrieve a box of donated items for the heritage display at the Founder’s Ball. While helping Elena ready herself for the party, Bonnie shares Caroline’s secret, planting the suspicion that Stefan may be concealing the truth about his relationship with Katherine. Stefan watches carefully as Damon pours a glass of Scotch. When Mrs. Lockwood phones to say that the pocket watch was not among the items that Tyler picked up for the display, Elena accuses Jeremy of stealing it and finds the watch hidden in his bedroom. Damon chides Stefan for spiking his Scotch with vervain.

On his way out the door, Zach hands Stefan a small vial of vervain, telling him that this time it is twice as potent. Feeling badly, Elena decides to leave the pocket watch on Jeremy’s desk. At the Founder’s Ball, a former boyfriend of Jenna’s, Logan Fell, makes an attempt at reconciliation. Caroline asks Stefan for a dance, leaving Damon alone with Elena at the Heritage Display.

Damon apologizes for his forward behavior at the game, and explains that the Salvatore brothers are cursed with sibling rivalry. Stefan toasts to Caroline and watches her sip from the glass that he obtained for her. Elena listens as Damon shares the ‘first’ Salvatore brother’s history involving the woman that they both loved. Insulted at Tyler’s refusal to treat her with respect, Vicki leaves the party early. Frustrated, Elena leaves Stefan alone on the dance floor when he refuses to share details about his past.

Mrs. Lockwood pressures Elena to locate the pocket watch after she makes excuses for it’s absence. Damon reveals the true motive for attending the Founder’s Ball when he retrieves a crystal hidden in a wooden box in the Heritage Display. Logan wins over Jenna when she finally agrees to a date. Bonnie amazes herself when she is able to light every candle in the dining room using her powers. Elena questions Caroline about the bite marks that Damon has left on her body.

Elena threatens Damon to stay away from Caroline. When Elena tells Stefan about the marks, Stefan maintains his secrecy and rushes to deal with Damon. Vicki appears on Jeremy’s doorstep and they kiss. Having removed Caroline from view, Damon sinks his teeth into her neck, then collapses on to the grass in agony. Stefan confesses to Damon that he spiked Caroline’s drink with vervain. After awakening, Caroline grabs the crystal and conceals it within her purse. Elena consoles Caroline. Stefan and Zach lock Damon into a cell in the basement of the boardinghouse. Later that evening, the mayor, his wife, Sheriff Forbes, and Logan Fell meet to discuss retrieving the watch, saying, “They’ve come back.”

Quotes

Damon (to Stefan): "Bad dream? Do you know how easy it was to get in your head just now? You really need some human blood. It might even the playing field. [pause] Football reference! Too soon?"
Damon (to Stefan, while examining his ruined shirt): "This is John Varavatos, dude. Dick. Move."
Elena: "How do you look in a suit?"
Stefan: "I can pull one off."
Damon: "What's so special about this Bella girl? Edward's so whipped."
Caroline: "You gotta read the first book first. It won't make sense if you don't."
Damon: "Huh. I miss Anne Rice. She was so on it."
Caroline: "How come you don't sparkle?"
Damon: "Because I live in the real world, where vampires burn in the sun."
Caroline: "I'm not really supposed to say anything."
Bonnie: "Caroline Forbes, when have you ever kept a secret in your life?"
Zach (to Stefan): "Blood only runs so deep when you're related to vampires."
Elena: "Anyway, his past relationships are none of my business."
Bonnie: "Unless he's a calculating, manipulative liar. That is your business."
Elena: "Stefan is none of those things."
Bonnie: "Yeah? How do you know?"
Damon (to Stefan): "You're dead, dude. Get over it."
Damon: "It's cool not growing old. I like being the eternal stud."
Stefan: "Yes, being a 150 year old teenager has been the height of my happiness."
Logan: "Not so fast. I know you. You have a lot more insults in you, I can tell."
Jenna: "Your hairline's receding."
Logan: "No, it's not. Wanna have lunch?"
Jenna: "Nope."
Logan: "You haven't changed a bit."
Jenna: "Oh yes, I have. I'm meaner now."
Vicki: "So you wanna dance?"
Tyler: "Me, dancing? Not pretty."
Vicki: "Well, maybe you could show me around. I mean, this place is amazing."
Tyler: "Yeah - if you like living in a museum."
Vicki: "Maybe I should just strip naked and give Pastor Bill a lap dance. I mean, that's why we're hiding in a corner all night, isn't it? You're scared of how I'm gonna act? You afraid of what your parents are gonna think about your date from the wrong side of the tracks?"
Mrs. Lockwood (to Tyler about Vicki): "That's what you get when you bring the trash into the party."
Bonnie (to Elena): "This is my fault. I planted doubt. I'm a doubt-planter."

Book references

  • Honoria Fell is listed as one of the guests at the original Founders' party in 1864. She was one of the town founders of Fell's Church in the book series.
  • Vicki suggests that she should strip naked and give Pastor Bill a lap dance. This may or may not be a reference to Vickie Bennett doing a striptease in the school cafeteria.

Trivia

  • Damon mentions his shirt is made by American clothing designer John Varvatos. Ian Somerhalder is a known fan of the real Varvatos' clothing line.[1][2]
  • When Elena is reading aloud some of the names on the 1864 Founders' Day Celebration guest registration, she says, "Mayor Benjamin Lockwood." However, when the document is shown, the name just out of full view reads, "Mayor Jacob Lockwood." This was confirmed when the full version of the document surfaced.[3]
  • Matt Donovan does not appear once in this episode.
