Official synopsis: Stefan is hopeful that his plan to get rid of Damon is working. Elena and Jenna are concerned about Jeremy’s relationship with Vicki. Stefan decides to reveal parts of his past to Elena. At a fund-raising car wash, Bonnie is surprised by abilities she didn’t know she possessed, and seeks advice from her grandmother. Finally, Elena hears a disturbing story about the Salvatore family from a stranger.

Synopsis

Salvatore Boarding House - Stefan goes to check on Damon, who has been locked up in the basement dungeon for the past three days. When a weakened Damon asks for his ring, Stefan says than he will not be needing it and that Damon has been injected with enough vervain to keep him weak. Eventually, his body will desicate until he is removed to the family crypt, where the situation will be re-evaluated in 50 years. At the Gilbert house, Elena wakes up and starts to write in her diary but stops. She gets up and finds Vicki in the bathroom. Vicki returns to Jeremy's room, where she spent the night. In the kitchen, Jenna is having breakfast and Elena asks if she is aware of what is going on upstairs. Jenna says she is but that he could have been more secretive about it. She asks Elena if she has heard from Stefan but all she has got is a really obscure message from him saying that they'll talk soon. Jenna says that she is meeting Logan at the Mystic Grill for lunch.
At Caroline's she tells Bonnie about how much she can remember regarding Damon's attack on her at the Founders' Party but most of it is fuzzy. Bonnie sees the amber crystal necklace and asks about it but Caroline just says it's hers now that Damon doesn't have it. She hangs it from a coat stand as a crow is seen on the window sill. Back at the Salvatore Boarding House, Stefan tells Zach that Damon is weak but still dangerous and to stay away from the basement. He also says he's going to school to try and make amends with Elena and will see what else he can do about Damon. At the school, Bonnie and Elena see Caroline talking about the "Sexy Suds" car wash as if nothing has happened to her. Stefan arrives and Bonnie excuses herself. Stefan apologises to Elena for his absence and says that he's sorted out things with Damon. They agree to meet at the Mystic Grill after school. Caroline approaches them and enquires about Damon. Stefan says he's left town and isn't coming back. Elena tells a disappointed Caroline it's probably for the best.
Later, Elena goes to the Mystic Grill to meet Stefan and finds Matt playing pool. He invites her to join him. At the Salvatore Boarding House, Zach overhears Damon coughing and goes to check on him. Damon says Zach is family and will help him get out but Zach says they're only family in the more dysfunctional sense. He tells Damon that he has been afraid to raise a family because Damon always shows up unnounced and that he tells Zach that it's not his house and he's only permitting him to live there and in his weakened state, he jokingly says that someone is needed to mow the lawn. Zach says he just came to say goodbye and when he turns to leave, Damon manages to grab his throat through the grille and attempts to strangle him, before Stefan steps in to help Zach. He tells Damon to keep it up as the more strength he uses, the quicker he'll perish.
At the Mystic Grill, Elena and Matt are playing pool and Elena starts wondering about why Stefan is so secretive all the time. Matt says that Stefan is overall a nice guy and maybe she's thinking too hard about all this. Stefan shows up and apologises for being over an hour late. Elena wants to know why he couldn't have just contacted her. Suddenly, an old man says he recognises Stefan and comments that he hasn't aged a day. Stefan says he has the wrong person and Elena is more confused than ever. She leaves Stefan and he looks at the old man.
Gilbert house: In her bedroom, Elena is writing in her diary:
I tried. I want so much to make things right but every instinct in my body is telling me to be careful. What you don't know can't hurt you."
At the Mystic Grill, Logan and Sheriff Forbes encounter one another and she enquires about the pocketwatch. Logan says he's still working on obtaining it and Sheriff Forbes says it's been handed down to the first-born male through each generation, so Jeremy probably has it. Jenna shows up for a date and says she's giving Logan just an hour of her time. Later at the Gilbert house, Jeremy and Elena are talking and Jeremy suggests that Elena's mood will improve once she has something to eat. Elena goes down to the kitchen and finds Stefan cooking a meal for them. He decides to tell her about Katherine, who he says was beautiful but could be selfish. In the end, she chose Stefan over Damon, which caused the friction between the two brothers. In Jeremy's room, Vicki finds Elena's medication from the car accident and ignores Jeremy when he says they're always getting high and should stop. Back in the kitchen, Stefan and Elena continue talking and Stefan lists his interests. Elena takes over chopping the food and suddenly cuts herself. She runs to the sink to clean it up and Stefan sees her blood on his hand. His vampire senses kick in and Elena sees his face in the window. She is startled but asks him to turn around. He says he's fine and they kiss.
At Caroline's house, she is on the phone to Tiki talking about the Sexy Suds car wash. Meanwhile, at the Boarding House, Damon attempts to summon her. She goes to her mirror and sees a sillhouette behind her but when she turns around there's nothing there. She says goodbye to Tiki while Damon looks on creepily from his dungeon. Later, Stefan and Damon are talking to each other and Damon says that Stefan must stop lying to himself about what he really is. Stefan says that the difference between him and his brother is that he can leave any time he wants.
The following day at the Sexy Suds car wash, Elena and Stefan meet up and are scolded by Caroline for their closeness. Elsewhere, Bonnie tells Tiki she has a customer and when Tiki insults a customer about his car, Bonnie uses her mind to control the hose in the bucket of water. Its contents drench Tiki and Matt hands her a towel to dry off. Logan is conducting a news report about the car wash, which has been organised to raise funds in memory of Mr. Tanner. Elena and Stefan wash a car together and Elena questions him about his ring. He says that the stone in it is called 'lapis lazuli' and Elena offers to keep it in her bag, so it doesn't get wet. Stefan refuses her offer and she says she's going to get more towels. She tells Caroline, who goes off to get them.
Once inside the darkened corridors she finds the storeroom locked and when she turns around she sees an image of Damon, who asks for her help. Obviously startled, she runs off. Outside, Elena is talking to the old man she and Stefan encountered in the Mystic Grill. He tells her that he remembers staying at the Salvatore Boarding House and seeing Stefan and Damon and that their uncle, Joseph, was murdered there. Tiki interrupts and tells the old man (her grandfather) that he must go home. He's about to leave when Elena asks him more about the incident. He says that it occurred in June 1953.
Elena talks to Stefan again and says she never knew his family were Italian. She excuses herself and says that she has to do something. She talks to Logan and saying she has an overdue report, requests to see old news footage from 1953. Logan says he can give her a ride to the station and asks Jenna if he can have dinner at her house in return. At the Salvatore Boarding House, Caroline (under Damon's influence) lets herself in and finds him locked in the dungeon. She suddenly asks how she knew he was there and he says he wanted her to know. She says she remembers him biting her but he says she liked it. He also says she's going to open the door and let him out. She is about to unlock it when Zach suddenly appears behind her and attempts to prevent Damon from escaping. It fails and Damon manages to break out, knocking Zach down and killing him by snapping his neck. He chases Caroline through the house until she opens the front door. As he doesn't have his ring, Damon starts to burn up as soon as the sun's rays hit him. He looks on angrily as Caroline escapes.
Back at the car wash, Bonnie is ordered by Tiki to sweep the pavement. Bonnie uses her mind to start a fire and sets a car ablaze. She appears to be in a trancelike state before Stefan manages to revive her. He says that no one saw her start the fire. Elena and Logan enter the editing room at the station and she starts looking at the computer. Logan gets a phone call about the fire at the car wash and leaves.
Jeremy and Vicki go to the cemetery to hang out with Vicki's friends, who come from the wrong side of the tracks like her. Jeremy finds out she took Elena's medication. Vicki attempts to apologise but Jeremy says she's better off with the likes of Tyler and her low life friends. Upset, Vicki tells him to just go home.
At the car wash, Stefan asks Matt if he has seen Elena. Matt says he hasn't but tells Stefan that Elena will not stop until she figures out whatever Stefan has been hiding so he advises him to come clean. At the station, Elena continues her research and finds video footage from June 12, 1953. It contains a news report by Logan's father taken outside the Salvatore Boarding House. A body can be seen being removed by paramedics as someone in the background looks on. The news team wonders if it's one of Joseph's nephews. Elena plays it back and zooms in on the figure. It's Stefan and, sure enough, he hasn't aged a day. Elena is stunned.
That night in Caroline's room, her mother asks her if she is okay and if it's a boy problem. Caroline says that if she wants to talk about boys she'll go to her father as he's dating one. At the Boarding House, Stefan finds the dead crow and Zach's body. Caroline settles herself into bed and the light from the amber crystal on her coat stand reflects a star on her bed covers. Bonnie goes to visit Grams about her powers and at the Gilbert house, Logan finds the pocketwatch. Jeremy asks him what he's doing and he lies, saying he's looking for the bathroom.
In her room, Elena writes in her diary:
Dear Diary, I am not a believer. People are born, they grow old, and then they die. That's the world we live in. How can I deny what's right in front of me? Someone who never grows old, never gets hurt. Someone who changes in ways that can't be explained. Girls bitten, bodies drained of blood..."
Vicki and her friends sit in the cemetery and when the music on the pickup truck's radio stops playing, her friends get her to go and change it. When she turns it back on she sees a darkened figure behind the vehicle and asks if he needs help. It's Damon and in his weakened state he grabs onto her and savagely attacks her. She screams as her hand slips from the side of the truck. At the Boarding House, Stefan holds Zach's lifeless body and decides to set out, stake in hand, to find and kill his brother. When he opens the front door, Elena is standing there and demands to know the truth about him, as the episode ends.

Elena: "And there's Vicki, all nonchalant in the bathroom like it's no big deal that they're hooking up."
Matt: "Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. Your brother and my sister, that's weird."
Bonnie: "Uh uh. No. None of that tortured, piney stuff."
Matt: "I'm just observing!"
