Synopsis

Warning: This synopsis contains detailed spoilers about the plot.

In her room, Elena is questioning her discovery.

Dear Diary, I am not a believer. People are born, they grow old, and then they die. That's the world we live in. How can I deny what's right in front of me? Someone who never grows old, never gets hurt. Someone who changes in ways that can't be explained. Girls bitten, bodies drained of blood..."

Stefan runs to open the door and a white light takes us back to Mystic Falls in 1864. Stefan steps out of his front door to greet his guests. A beautiful young woman emerges from the carriage and when he asks if she must be Miss Pierce, she asks him to call her Katherine. They exchange glances at one another.

Back in the present, Stefan opens the front door to find Elena standing there. She demands to know what he is and repeats the question. Stefan says she already knows and wouldn't be there if she didn't. He says that everything she thought she knew is about to change and tells her that he's a vampire. Shocked, she attempts to run back to her car but Stefan is suddenly in front of her. He tries to reason with her but as she's too frightened she drives off. She reaches her house and paces around her room until she suddenly hears Stefan behind her. She tries to run out the door but he stops her, saying he would never hurt her. When she asks about the animal attacks she says Damon did it, as he feeds on human blood but Stefan chooses not to do this. Elena says that if he means her no harm he will leave. Stefan does but hangs around outside her house.

Meanwhile, at the darkened cemetery, Damon has just finished feeding on Vicki and her friends. He phones Stefan demanding to know where his ring is and says that Stefan has to return it to him or else there will be trouble, which includes him paying a visit to Elena. Stefan says that he will find it but needs time. Damon hangs up and while pouring the remainder of the vodka around Vicki, notices that she is still alive. He says she just doesn't want to die and decides to bring her home with him. Stefan contines to hang around outside Elena's house while she settles into bed. The following day, Elena tries to write in her diary but leaves the house instead. She and Stefan meet over a drink and Stefan tells her everything he knows about the vampire world and the town's history and he asks her to give him the rest of the day to explain everything, to which she agrees. At the cemetery, Logan and Sheriff Forbes come across the dead bodies and find Vicki's driver's license but Vicki is nowhere to be found.

At the Boarding House, Damon phones Stefan, leaving him countless messages demanding his ring back. He sees Vicki asleep on the couch, asks her not to get blood on it and examines her saying he did a good job feeding on her. As he's bored because he cannot go outside during daylight hours without his ring, he decides to rouse her by feeding her his blood. Stefan and Elena take a drive to where his home used to be located and he tells her about it. He confesses that he has been 17 years old since 1864. Flashback #1: Stefan and Damon run outside and play football with each other and when Katherine says they don't need rules to play, she asks to join in. Stefan says she could get hurt and that Damon likes to play rough. Katherine says she thinks Stefan plays rougher and runs away with the ball. Both brothers chase her. Back in the present, Stefan tells Elena that they thought Katherine was perfect. Flashback #2: Stefan chases Katherine around the gardens and they see that Damon has returned from battle. Katherine remarks that now she has both brothers to keep her company and asks who will take her to the Founders' Ball. Both brothers offer but Katherine asks how will she choose and walks off. Stefan tells Elena that Katherine chose him over his brother, as she didn't care about Damon. Elena realises they attended the first ever Founders' Party.

At the Boarding House, Vicki has cleaned herself up and Damon compels her again, saying that she loved the taste of his blood and that they are going to party until the sun goes down. Vicki asks for more of his blood and they feed off each other. Stefan tells Elena that even though both brothers loved Katherine, she wasn't theirs for the taking. Flashback #3: Stefan and Katherine are having sex in her bedroom and Stefan says that he will love her forever. She says that forever is a very long time and reveals her vampire face to him, savagely attacking him. He awakes the next morning, confused by what has happened. Katherine compels him and says he will not tell anyone what's happened and that he has no idea about the kind of future she has planned for her, Stefan and Damon. Back in the present, Stefan comes across Damon's ring and picks it up. He says he has to return it but Elena says he can't. He tells her that if he doesn't, Damon will hurt him in the only way he knows how - by hurting Elena. He also says that if he didn't give Damon his ring back he would hurt Stefan in the only way he knows - by hurting Elena.

At the Lockwood residence, Sheriff Forbes tells him that they found the bodies in the cemetery but no sign of Vicki. Logan arrives and gives Mayor Lockwood the pocketwatch and he turns it into a compass. Back at the Boarding House, Damon and Vicki get on really well and are both high from each other's blood. They trash Stefan's room and Damon finds the photo of Katherine, while Vicki jumps up and down on Stefan's bed. They embrace and Vicki tells Damon about her miserable life. Being uncharacteristically nice to her, Damon remarks that she has such low self-esteem and knows how to solve her problem, whereupon he snaps her neck, triggering her transformation. As she is unconscious, he goes to the window and tries to put his hand in the sunlight but it starts to singe as soon as he does. Soon, Vicki rouses and asks what happened to her. He says he killed her and that they shouldn't make a big deal out of it. She decides she wants to go home and Damon says she should and asks that she let Stefan know he's looking for him. In the forest, Logan and Sheriff Forbes talk about splitting up to find any vampires and Logan says he'll stake any he comes across.

Vicki heads to see Jeremy but cannot stand the sunlight. She's hungry and obviously in pain. Back in the forest, Elena and Stefan head back to the car and he tells her that the necklace she is wearing has vervain in it and will stop her from being compelled. Elena says that she'll try to keep his secret and Stefan says she's free to make her own choice. Noticing Vicki's odd behaviour, Jeremy calls Matt for help. He arrives at the house and finds his sister in a terrible state. She cannot tolerate the noise level and her gums are paining her. They see a news report on the TV regarding the cemetery murders and when Jeremy tries to help her, she forces him against the sofa. Stefan and Elena arrive home and Stefan glamours Vicki, saying everything will be fine. He asks Jeremy to take her upstairs. He tells Elena that Vicki has begun her transformation and needs to feed to complete the process. If she doesn't, she'll die but she has a choice about what ultimately happens. Elena asks if Stefan also had one.

In his room, Jeremy tries to comfort Vicki but when her newfound vampire senses kick in, she runs off. Stefan says he will go to find her. Later that evening, Logan is in the forest and noticing some activity with the compass, phones Sheriff Forbes to tell her he's found a vampire at the cemetery. At the Gilbert house, Elena and Jeremy are tidying up and she reassures him that Stefan and Matt will find Vicki. They hear the doorbell ring and when Elena opens it she immediately tries to slam it as it's Damon, who's looking for Stefan. Elena tells Jeremy to go upstairs and Damon asks to come in before he says he can as he has already been invited in. Damon tells her that he will not kill her and asks where Stefan is. Elena says he's out looking for Vicki and Damon threatens her, saying Vicki will thank him for what he did to her. Elena asks if he thanked Katherine and he backs away. Then he asks if Stefan told her the whole story and Elena says she got enough information, which he doubts. Then he leaves and gives her a tip - be careful who she invites in the house.

Stefan eventually locates a crying Vicki in the cemetery and tells her that if she doesn't feed, she'll die. Stefan says Damon had no right to do this to her and in a desperate state, she asks to be taken home. Suddenly, Logan arrives and shoots him. He collapses and is about to be staked, when Damon savagely attacks Logan from behind, killing him. He extracts the wooden bullet from his brother and asks for his ring back. Suddenly, they see Vicki feeding on Logan, before she apologises and runs off. Damon sees the pocketwatch on the ground and takes it. Sheriff Forbes arrives soon after and finds Logan's dead body. She demands that the pocketwatch be found.

Back at Elena's house, Stefan tells her he found Vicki but was too late to help her. He reassures Elena that he will help Vicki in any way possible and Elena wonders what she should tell Matt and Jeremy. She also says that she will continue to keep his secret but can no longer be with him. She decides to break up with him and runs into the house, where she collapses and cries, as the episode ends.

Book references

Other references

  • The Lost Boys, a 1987 comedy/horror film starring Kiefer Sutherland about two young Arizonan brothers who move to California and end up fighting a gang of teenage vampires. The title is a reference to the Lost Boys in J. M. Barrie's stories about Peter Pan and Neverland, where people remained forever young.

Trivia

  • In her Vampire Diaries Month interview with The VRO, Julie Plec revealed that there was a huge debate in the Writers' Room whether to do flashbacks on the show, finally resulting in a secret poll. The final answer was a unanimous YES.[1]
  • Elena and Jeremy Gilbert share a bathroom that adjoins both of their bedrooms.
  • Vicki's driver's license should technically be printed vertically, not horizontally. The state of Virginia issues driver's licenses to minors (those under the age of 21) in the vertical position so that they can more readily be identified as minors.[2]
  • Jenna Sommers, Bonnie Bennett, Caroline Forbes and Tyler Lockwood do not appear once in this episode.
