Official synopsis: On his birthday, Stefan is surprised by a visit from Lexi, one of his oldest friends. Still upset by the events at the Halloween haunted house, Elena does her best to stay away from Stefan, but Lexi gives her some unsolicited relationship advice. Elena and Jenna are surprised by a change in Jeremy’s behavior. At Damon’s insistence, Caroline tries to get his medallion back from Bonnie. Finally, Damon’s offer to help Sheriff Forbes has sudden and tragic results.

Synopsis

Stefan’s oldest friend Lexi surprises him with a visit to wish him a happy birthday. As she coaxes Stefan into celebrating his 162nd birthday, the two reminisce about the past as well as discuss Elena, Katherine and the recent events in Mystic Falls. At the police station, Sheriff Forbes grills Jeremy, Matt, Stefan and Elena on the whereabouts of Vicki, and they all agree she skipped town. Outside, Stefan thanks Elena for her help, but Elena asks him to stay away after explaining she’s had enough of keeping secrets and seeing people around her get hurt. Back at the Salvatore mansion, Lexi makes her dislike for Damon clear and exerts her 350-year-old vampire strength on him as she tells him not to ruin her time with Stefan. Grams convinces Bonnie to keep Emily’s necklace and wear it for protection. At the Gilbert residence, Jenna and Elena are distracted from their wallowing by the dramatic change in Jeremy, who is busy studying and no longer moody. Damon pays Sheriff Forbes a visit with a fresh supply of vervain and offers his help after she speculates whether they’ve had difficulty tracking the vampires because they can walk in daylight.
Bonnie cheers Elena up by revealing her powers of witchcraft through a magical display of floating feathers. Damon has a plan to solve the town’s vampire problem and compels Caroline to throw a party at the Grill in order to ensure Stefan and Lexi’s attendance. Stefan explains to Lexi that he stays away from human blood because he worries he may not be able to stop once he starts. Damon walks in and tells them to attend a party at the Grill, but when Stefan demurs, Damon explains they need to blend in with the town better. Bonnie tells Elena she revealed her powers because she can’t keep secrets from her best friend. Stefan is still reluctant to attend the party and suspects Damon of scheming, but Lexi appeals to Stefan’s fun side and convinces him to go. Elena pays Stefan a visit at the mansion only to find a shocked Lexi in a towel instead. Elena leaves, also disturbed. Lexi thinks Stefan is crazy for dating Katherine’s doppelganger.
Stefan admits to Lexi he is in love with Elena after explaining that she is nothing like Katherine. Caroline is admiring her party, but Damon tells her he won’t be having a good time until she gets Emily’s crystal back from Bonnie. Stefan stops by Elena’s and explains about Lexi, while Elena expresses how difficult it has been keeping secrets and having no one but him to talk to. Back at the Grill, Caroline unsuccessfully tries to get the necklace back from Bonnie. A bitter Matt tells Stefan Vicki is just like their mother after Stefan apologizes for what happened and explains he went through something similar once and was only trying to help. Damon tells Caroline she is stupid, shallow and useless after she confesses she was unable to get the crystal necklace back. Lexi tries to cajole a very reluctant Stefan into dancing as Damon exits the Grill. Outside, Damon witnesses a couple kissing in the alleyway and compels the woman after he kills the man.
Back inside the Grill, Damon explains to Elena that he took away Jeremy’s suffering after she accuses him of doing more due to the complete change in Jeremy’s personality. Bonnie tries and fails to smooth things over with Caroline, who is upset by Damon’s hurtful words. Outside, the police hears the woman’s cries for help and find the body of the man. Lexi bonds with Elena over drinks -- explaining the alcohol takes the “edge off” for vampires -- and tells Elena that it takes time to adjust to dating a Vampire but that love will ultimately “conquer all.” Stefan thanks Lexi for her help with Elena. Sheriff Forbes arrives and tells the officer to not say anything about the body and asks the woman to tell her everything she witnessed.
Elena and Stefan reconnect after she tells him she couldn’t miss his 162nd birthday. Damon’s words continue to haunt a very drunk and upset Caroline, who finds a sympathetic ear in Matt. He takes her home, but they run into Caroline’s mom, Sheriff Forbes, on their way out. Sheriff Forbes then tells the officers not to let anyone else leave the Grill. Lexi tries to get Damon to reveal why he’s in Mystic Falls but all he says is that he has a “diabolical master plan”. Sheriff Forbes enters the Grill with the woman from the alley, who identifies Lexi as the person who murdered her boyfriend. Stefan and Elena see the sheriff inject Lexi with vervain and follow via a back door as the police drag her outside. Stefan and Elena are horrified when they witness Damon impaling Lexi with a stake after she manages to throw off her captors.
After Sheriff Forbes arrests the bartender for serving alcohol to minors, she approaches Damon to thank him again for his help in catching Lexi, not suspecting that Damon compelled the witness to identify her. Caroline asks Matt to stay with her after he takes her home and they commiserate over the circumstances in their lives. Back at the Grill, Elena tries to talk a very distraught Stefan out of killing Damon, believing his brother has proven himself irredeemable and leaves after telling Elena she was right to stay away. Back at the Salvatore mansion, the brothers brawl until Stefan stakes Damon in the gut, sparing him death because Damon had previously saved his life. Meanwhile, a sleeping Bonnie dreams that she is running through the forest at night and sees her ancestor Emily, who tells her, “it’s coming.” The episode ends as Bonnie jolts awake and finds herself in Fell's Church cemetery.

Stefan: "Inflicting misery somewhere."
Lexi: "Uh huh."
Stefan: "Hey, um, you going to be okay here, alone? I’ve got some things I’ve got to take care of."
Lexi: "Well, it’s not exactly like I can go anywhere. You and Damon are the only ones with these nifty little daylight rings. I’ve got a mood ring from ‘75. Trade ya?"
Stefan: "It doesn’t work that way, and you know it."
Stefan: "Katherine and Elena may look the same on the outside, but on the inside they are completely different."
Lexi: "Oh, so Elena's not a raging bitch then, huh?"
Damon: "Why are you so mean to me?"
Lexi: "Uh, have you met you? You're not a nice person."
Damon: "Because I'm a vampire."
Lexi: "But you're only the bad parts."
Damon: "Teach me to be good."
Bonnie: "I'm officially worried. What's going on?"
Elena: "I'm tired of thinking... of talking. I..."
Bonnie: "Can I get a one-line version so I can at least pretend to be helpful?"
Elena: "Stefan and I broke up."
Bonnie: "I'm so sorry. Are you okay? Right. Stupid question."
Stefan: "Elena is... Elena's warm. And she's... she's kind and she's caring and she's selfless... and it's real. And... honestly, when I'm around her... I completely forget what I am."
Lexi: "Oh my God! You're in love with her."
Stefan: "Yeah. Yeah, I am."
(Elena is watching Stefan and Lexi playing pool; Damon walks up to Elena)
Damon: "Stefan smiles. Alert the media."
Elena: "You haven't given him a lot of reasons to be happy lately."
Damon: "Oh, you're right. Poor Stefan. Persecuted throughout eternity by his depraved brother. Does it get tiring being so righteous?"
Elena: "It flares up in the presence of psychopaths."
Damon: "Ouch. Well, consider this psychopath's feelings hurt."
Matt: "Bad night, huh?"
Caroline: "Baddest. Am I shallow?"
Matt: "Is that a trick question?"
Caroline: "I don’t meant to be. I want to be deep. I want to be, like, the abyss-deep."
Matt: "No offense Care, but deep's not really your scene."
Caroline: "It’s true. I’m shallow. I’m worse than shallow. I’m a kiddie pool."
Matt: "You’re not a kiddie pool."
Damon: "I have a diabolical master plan."
Lexi: "What is it?"
Damon: "Well, if I told you, it wouldn't be very diabolical, now would it?"
Stefan (to Damon, after staking him and missing his heart): "You saved my life. Now I'm sparing yours. We're even."
