Official synopsis: Damon takes a trip to Georgia, where he surprises an old flame, Bree, and enlists her help to figure out how to open the tomb. In the process, Damon comes face to face with someone who is determined to make him pay for past wrongs. Stefan opens up to Grams in his effort to help Bonnie overcome her fears and accept her powers. While researching his history paper in the public library, Jeremy meets a cute-but-geeky girl named Anna who has her own theories on the folklore of Mystic Falls. When Damon returns from Georgia, Stefan is waiting with news that will change their world.

Synopsis

Stefan tries to contact Elena, explaining Katherine’s photograph but she remains trapped in her overturned car. Seeing the man approaching, she screams but he disappears and Damon arrives. He saves her before she faints and walks away, carrying her. Next morning: Alaric details his encounter with Logan. Flashback #1: He tells his wife he won't be home late. Georgia: Elena wakes up in Damon’s car and is shocked when he mentions their location. Telling him to stop, she gets out and winces so he rushes to help. As she’s in Georgia sans necklace, he can easily make her “agreeable”. Stefan phones and he answers, saying she doesn’t want to talk to him. Stefan issues a warning but Damon ignores him and hangs up. Elena agrees to continue their journey, asking if she'll be safe and if he won't compel her and he answers, "Yes". Finally, asking if she can trust him, he tells her to get in the car. At school, Jeremy and Alaric discuss his assignment. Stefan asks Bonnie to read Elena’s necklace, but her powers won’t work. Atlanta: Damon and Elena reach "Bree's Bar" and Bree kisses him passionately. He reveals she’s a witch, before she asks why they're there. Library: Jeremy meets a geeky girl called Anna. Grams’ house: Bonnie is told to confront her fears.
Atlanta: Damon and Bree discuss the tomb, but he’s sans crystal and Emily's spell is absolute. Tomb site: Bonnie falls through a hole. Bree’s Bar: Elena phones Stefan, rebuking him for lying and wants to know how she’s connected to Katherine. Hanging up, she finds Damon standing behind her and tells him not to act like he cares, as he's gloating inside. Bree phones someone to say that Damon is there. Tomb site: Failing to get a signal, Bonnie sees a star-shaped symbol. Grams’ house: Stefan calls by and she says he knows where Bonnie is.
Library: Anna shows Jeremy literature about vampires. Bree's Bar: Elena and Damon discuss Katherine and she asks if his niceness act is real. Elena also asks Bree for a beer. Library: Anna is impressed by Jeremy's knowledge of vampires, tells him she has to leave and reveals her ancestor also kept a journal. He asks her to stay. Stefan rescues Bonnie and says the entombed vampires can’t escape. Bree’s Bar: Elena isn’t drunk, in spite of drinking so much and she even teases Damon about his inability to consume alcohol. A man arrives and Bree, seeing him, nods in Damon’s direction. Mystic Grill: Anna and Jeremy are playing foosball and he can’t believe both their ancestors kept journals. Soon she has to go.
Bree's Bar: A drunken Elena goes outside to answer her phone, drops it when she trips, and is grabbed from behind. When Damon returns he notices her missing and sees her phone flashing outside. Finding her by a metal structure she tells him not to come near. He’s suddenly hit by the mystery person who abducted her, doused in gasoline and yelled at. Elena pleads with the man not to hurt him and soon learns that he is Lexi's boyfriend, Lee. Noticing a lighter in his hand, she tells him that Lexi loved him and again begs him to spare Damon’s life. Eventually relenting, he throws Damon across the yard, knocking him out. He disappears as Elena rushes to Damon's side. Elsewhere, Stefan brings Bonnie home and Grams thanks him. As he leaves, she reveals she will protect her own before anyone else. Bree’s Bar: An angry Damon confronts Bree. Asking how he could kill Lexi, she tries to walk away but he appears in front of her and panicking, she reveals the tomb can be opened with Emily's grimoire. Initially, he thinks she's lying but she swears she’s not, so he tells her he believes her, before ripping her heart out and leaving. Travelling home, he admits to Elena that she isn't the worst company in the world. She comments that she saved his life and they smile.
Boarding House: Stefan reveals to Elena the day they first met – when her parents died. She asks how she’s related to Katherine, so he finally reveals she's adopted. Library: Anna shows Jeremy online literature she found, detailing periodical attacks from 1942 onwards. Boarding House: Stefan tells Elena Miranda Gilbert never gave birth and examining the Pierce family history would be too risky and says she is the woman he loves. Later, she arrives home, asking if she was adopted and Jenna says she promised she wouldn't say anything, but Elena doesn't want to talk about it. Mystic Grill: Alaric is grading papers when Damon arrives and sits a few seats away. Flashback #2: Alaric witnesses Damon feeding on his wife. Taking a sip and placing the glass down, his hand falls beside it.

Book references
- The car accident on Wickery Bridge involving Elena and her parents is a variation on Elena's car accident at the end of The Struggle.
- Bonnie's fall into the tomb, and Stefan saving her, is reminiscent of a scene in The Struggle, when Stefan ends up at the bottom of a well and Bonnie's psychic visions help Elena, Meredith, and Matt locate and rescue him.

- Paul M. Sommers, Director of Photography, likened filming the Elena/Damon scenes for this episode to Badlands, a film starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek.[1] The film is loosely based on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate.
- The scenes at Bree's Bar were filmed at The Depot Bar & Grill, a bar located at 4122 Emory Street NW in Covington, Georgia.
- Caroline Forbes, Matt Donovan and Tyler Lockwood do not appear once in this episode.
