Official Synopsis: As Stefan and Damon try to figure out the identity of the new vampire in town, Stefan gives Elena jewelry filled with vervain to protect her family and friends. Hurting for money, Matt takes a job at the Mystic Grill, where former high school football-star Ben works as a bartender. Ben comes to Bonnie's aid when he notices Damon is bothering her. Damon and Stefan accompany Elena to a school dance with a 1950s theme, where Alaric introduces himself to Damon.

Synopsis

Concerned about the new vampire in town, Stefan gives Elena vervain-laced jewelry to share with her family and friends. Jeremy invites the hooded vampire, disguised as a pizza delivery man, in to the house. Stefan questions Damon about his real motive for taking Elena to Atlanta. After discussing the likelihood of vampires being real with Mr. Saltzman, Jeremy gives his ancestor’s journal to him to read. Elena gives Caroline a locket containing vervain, and they discuss Caroline’s new relationship with Matt. Ben, the bartender at the Mystic Grill, talks to Matt as he fills out an application. Elena reveals to Bonnie that she was adopted and expresses confusion regarding her parent’s names on her birth certificate. When Damon confronts Bonnie at the Grill, Ben intercedes, much to Bonnie’s appreciation. The hooded vampire stalks Elena in the parking lot, but she pulls away in her car before he has the chance to attack.
Stefan gives Elena a compass that can detect a vampire’s presence. Matt is offended by Caroline’s careless comments regarding his need to have a job. Jeremy thanks Anna for helping her with his history paper and excuses himself, saying that he is volunteering at the school dance. As Jenna prepares to help Mr. Saltzman chaperone the Decade Dance, she confesses to Elena that her birthmother’s name is Isobel. Damon questions his brother’s motives after Stefan gives him their father’s journal and announces that there isn’t any information about Katherine in it. Stefan rescues Elena when the hooded vampire attacks her in her home.
Stefan is worried about Elena and the plan to use her to trap the hooded vampire while they attend the school dance. Alaric stiffens when he sees Damon at the dance. Stefan explains to Elena that vampires cannot sense the presence of other vampires as they take a spin on the dance floor.
Anna suddenly appears at the dance. Matt continues to be offended by Caroline’s insensitve remarks while she and Bonnie are at the Grill. Damon grows suspicious of Alaric. Jeremy is confused by Anna’s eyes turning red when she becomes angry after explaining that he gave his ancestor’s journal to Mr. Saltzman. Anna warns the hooded vampire, Noah, that he will ruin everything if he doesn’t leave Elena alone, but he comments that wants to have fun with her because she looks like Katherine.
When Elena sees a hooded boy at the dance, Stefan rushes after him, only to realize that the boy is not the vampire and that he has left her alone. Noah coerces Elena in to meeting him by threatening Jeremy, but she fights back after being chased through the hallway in the school. Stefan grabs Noah, and when he and Damon pursue answers regarding his interest in Elena, he admits that she looks like Katherine, which surprises Damon, just before Stefan stakes him. While holding vervain in his hand, Alaric feigns being compelled when Damon questions him.
Damon agrees to let Stefan help him find Emily’s grimore, which will assist in opening the tomb to release Katherine. Caroline apologizes to Matt, but he rebuffs her. At the end of the evening, Alaric walks Jenna to the door and asks her on a date, piquing her curiosity when he tells her that he will keep talk of his wife, Isobel, to a minimum. Matt kisses Caroline after finding her walking home alone. While Elena relaxes at home with Stefan, he admits to tricking Damon into believing that he will help him open the tomb. Anna playfully attacks Ben, who is also a vampire, after he closes and locks up the Grill and explains that she knows how to find the grimoire; they kiss and walk away, arm in arm.
