Official Synopsis: In flashbacks, Stefan and Damon recall the long-ago actions taken by townspeople including their father, Giuseppe Salvatore, and Pearl, leading to the devastating events that caused the rift in their relationship. In the present, Bonnie's date with Ben takes a frightening turn. Elena helps Stefan as he and Damon race to find the missing journal that belonged to Elena's ancestor. Stefan learns the reason behind Alaric's interest in both the journal and the town’s history. Damon discovers that an old acquaintance has returned to town with an agenda he understands.

Synopsis

In 1864, Katherine teaches Damon how to kill humans by duping a man in his carriage into stopping. Reluctant at first, Damon tastes the blood on Katherine’s lips as he kisses her after she has finished feeding. Elena and Stefan awaken to find Damon at the foot of the bed, announcing his plan to retrieve Emily’s grimoire, which he needs to open the tomb to free Katherine. First, they need the Gilbert journal. In a flashback, Katherine toys with Damon in bed, but they are interrupted by Emily, who tells her mistress that Miss Pearl has come to speak with her. Katherine orders Emily to tell Mr. Salvatore that she has stepped away; when Emily asks which one, she replies, “Both.” Pearl tells Katherine it may be time to leave: the town is talking about her staying with the Salvatores and Honoria Fell dropped off elixir containing vervain at the apothecary for Pearl to sell. Anna is revealed to be Pearl's daughter. In a motel room, Anna instructs newly turned Ben, the bartender, on being a vampire so he can keep himself in control around Bonnie. Elena searches through family memorabilia, looking for the journal; she tells Stefan she believes that Damon has acted out of love but Stefan disagrees. After finding a wire muzzle, Elena closes its box up just as Jeremy enters, explaining that he loaned Johnathan Gilbert’s journal to Mr. Saltzman after he used it to write a history report. Alone at the high school, Alaric reads the journal. In a flashback, Johnathan Gilbert meets with Barnette Lockwood and Giuseppe Salvatore to discuss his vampire compass, their "church idea," and the need for every man in Mystic Falls, including the Salvatore boys, to help eradicate the vampires. Alaric photocopies the Gilbert journal and hides it in his locker, as Anna enters the school. Realizing that he is not alone, Alaric retrieve his weapon and fires when he finds Stefan in his classroom. Stefan catches the stake.
Stefan demands to know who Alaric really is, why he is in Mystic Falls, and where the Gilbert journal is located. At the motel, Anna reads the journal while Ben prepares for his date with Bonnie. In a flashback, Pearl begs Katherine to be careful when they discuss her desire to turn both boys. Pearl flirts with Johnathan Gilbert. Giuseppe questions Damon’s sense of duty and Stefan defends his brother; their father tells them they plan to kill the vampires. Damon helps Jenna prepare dinner while discussing dating fiascos. Stefan warns Alaric against seeking revenge on Damon for killing his wife, Isobel, whose body was never found. Elena lies to Damon, saying he can trust Stefan. In 1864, Damon makes Stefan promise not tell their father that Katherine is a vampire.
Jeremy and Damon play video games and talk about hot-weird Anna. Stefan arrives. On their date, Bonnie tells Ben that she would die for her best friend, Elena. Damon questions Jeremy about the Gilbert journal; he admits that he told Anna about it. Damon leaves to track down Anna, and Stefan reveals to Elena that he took Alaric’s copy. Jeremy meets Anna at the Grill while Damon watches on. In a flashback, Damon expresses his concern for Katherine and Pearl's safety. Damon recognizes Anna as Pearl’s daughter.
Stefan and Elena study the journal for information about where Emily’s grimoire is hidden. In a flashback, Giuseppe tells Stefan that he will carry his secrets to his grave and Stefan suggests that it’s possible the vampires may not be evil. Damon finds Anna in her motel room. Stefan and Elena prepare to dig up Giuseppe’s grave to retrieve the grimoire. When Katherine seduces Stefan in a flashback and feeds from him, she is poisoned by vervain, which Giuseppe slipped Stefan in a drink. Giuseppe bursts in and orders Stefan to get the sheriff.
Anna admits to Damon that she turned Logan because she thought that she needed his family’s journal to locate the grimoire. She suggests that they work together to open the tomb; Damon tells her he works alone. Bonnie senses that Ben is a vampire when she kisses him and when she tries to make an escape, he angrily grabs her from behind. Stefan retrieves the grimoire from his father’s coffin but Damon surprises them by appearing just as Stefan is opening the book.
Damon feels betrayed by Stefan and fooled by Elena. He feeds Elena his blood and threatens to turn her unless Stefan gives the grimoire to him. Stefan hands it over. In a flashback, Damon tries to stop the town’s men from taking a muzzled Katherine away; Giuseppe warns Damon that if he is branded a sympathizer, he will be killed along with the vampires. Stefan admits to Elena that Katherine's capture is his fault; in a flashback, Damon blames him for it. When Stefan goes downstairs to get an aspirin for Elena, he finds out that Jeremy’s friend, Anna, is in the house. In a flashback, Pearl orders Anna to get Emily and is captured by Johnathan Gilbert when the vampire compass points at her. Emily tells Anna she has a way to protect the captured vampires. Stefan speeds back to Elena’s room to find that she is gone.
