Official Synopsis: Stefan helps Elena and Bonnie out of a dangerous situation. Jeremy asks Anna to a party in the woods, unaware that she has her own reasons for wanting to meet him there. When Stefan, Damon and Elena work with Bonnie and Grams to open the tomb, everyone is shocked by what they discover.

Elena awakens in a motel room and sneaks towards the door, past a sleeping Ben. Ben appears and compels her not to escape. Wearing vervain, Elena is immune but plays along — before making a break for it. Anna returns and forces her into the bathroom, where she finds an unconscious Bonnie. In the library at the Boarding House, Damon examines the grimoire; Stefan enters, telling him Anna took Elena. Damon refuses to help. Stefan apologizes for Katherine's capture. Damon tells him he hopes Elena dies. Elena manages to rouse Bonnie and explains that they need a witch to break the spell binding the tomb closed. Ben bursts in and Bonnie says she won’t perform the spell. Elena comes face-to-face with Anna, who comments that she’s Katherine’s doppelganger. At the Grill, Tyler and Matt discuss Duke’s party. Caroline invites Jeremy to the party. She offers Matt an escape clause from their relationship. Grams Bennett tells Damon he’s not welcome at her house. When he threatens her, she gives him a sharp headache, warning him not to mess with her. Anna reveals that her mother’s in the tomb. She calls Stefan on Elena’s phone, telling him that one of the brothers must meet her in the town square. She orders Ben to watch their hostages. Bonnie sets Ben's arm on fire but the escape attempt fails.
Anna accepts Jeremy’s invite to the party. She and Damon meet in the square. She threatens to kill Elena if they don't work with her to open the tomb. He reluctantly agrees. As Ben threatens the girls, Stefan arrives, ordering Ben to leave town or be killed. Grams reveals that she used a locator spell to find them; Elena suggests letting Damon have Katherine back. Grams agrees to open the tomb as long as the rest of the vampires are killed. Elena says she'll convince Damon to work with them. Anna returns to find the hostages gone and formulates a new plan. Elena approaches Damon in the library. At first Damon's not interested, but Elena promises him she'll help get Katherine back and removes her vervain necklace to prove her honesty. As he puts her necklace back on her, he says he didn’t compel her in Atlanta because he wanted their time together to be real. He puts his trust in her again.
Arriving at Duke's party, Damon and Elena have an awkward conversation with Caroline and Matt. Grams, Bonnie, and Stefan are all set up at the tomb entrance as Damon and Elena arrive. Tyler approaches Jeremy, asking for drugs, but is rebuffed and calls him "the enemy of fun." Anna arrives. Outside the entrance to the tomb, Grams lights torches representing the elements and pours water on the ground. Jeremy and Anna talk in the woods and she tells him she's leaving town. They kiss and he notices her face turn, before Ben knocks him out.
Matt and Tyler talk about Caroline; she approaches and explains why she acted weird in front of Damon and Elena. Bonnie and Grams chant the spell, the torches flare, and the tomb door opens. Stefan leaves to prepare the fire to kill the vampires, and Damon pulls Elena into the tomb with him. Elena goes willingly, understanding he needs leverage. Stefan encounters Ben and Anna with an unconscious Jeremy. In the tomb, Damon disappears, leaving Elena alone in the near dark. Anna enters the tomb. Grams reveals that no vampires will be coming out. Stefan sets Ben ablaze, killing him. Elena stumbles through the tomb, tripping on dessicated vampires, and encounters Anna.
Stefan learns the spell only opened the door but didn't remove the seal to let vampires out. Anna feeds Elena’s blood to her mother; Stefan hears Elena screaming and runs into the tomb. Bonnie insists on removing the seal so Stefan can get back out. Elena leaves the tomb; Anna's mother is revived; Stefan is unable to get through the seal. He goes back in to get his brother and finds Damon screaming that Katherine is not in the tomb. Damon throws the blood bag he brought for Katherine against the wall. With Grams and Bonnie struggling to sustain the spell, Anna and her mother escape. Elena goes into the tomb to get the brothers, pleading with Damon to leave. They escape just as the witches lose their hold on the spell and the tomb door closes.
Back at the party, Matt tells Caroline he wants to make their relationship work. Stefan and Elena find Jeremy hurt but okay. Elena sees how broken Damon is and hugs him as Stefan looks on. Back at home, Grams tells Bonnie not to worry about her. Jeremy tells Elena he has no memory of what happened but when she leaves his room, he types "vampires" into a search engine. An angry Damon attacks Pearl in the motel room, realizing Anna knew Katherine wasn't in the tomb. Anna says Katherine didn't care enough to ever contact him. Elena phones Stefan, asking about Damon. He sits with his brother, as Damon stares into the fire. Bonnie brings Grams tea, thinking she's asleep, but realizes she’s passed away. Elena tries to comfort a hysterical Bonnie. In the tomb, the blood bag Damon left in the tomb rouses a vampire and he pushes the tomb door open, stepping into the light.

Stefan: "You know, all I can remember is hating you. There might have been a time when that was different, but your choices have erased anything good about you. But see — I also know that you have just as much reason to hate me. This all began with me. Katherine got taken away from you because of me. And I'm sorry."
Damon: "Apology accepted."
Stefan: "So please — just tell me what you know. It's Elena, Damon, if you know something, tell me."
Damon: "I mean this sincerely — I hope Elena dies."
Caroline: "So I have a speech. It is fully scripted and well-rehearsed. Are you ready for it?"
Matt: "You wrote a speech?"
Caroline: "Yes. It's a 'you kissed me, and I don't want things to be weird' speech. It's pre-emptive."
Matt: "Pre-emptive?"
Caroline: "Yeah. You know, in case you were having second thoughts or regrets or were, like, ooged out - "
Matt: "'Ooged,' huh?"
Caroline: "Can I just get on with the speech part?"
Matt: "Yeah, go for it."
Caroline: "So, I know that you don't think that this is going to work out between us. I just wanna let you know that right here and right now, I'm offering you an out. Like an escape clause."
Matt: "Why are you giving me an escape clause?"
Caroline: "I don't wanna make assumptions about what is we are doing here."
Matt: "Got it."
Caroline: "So ... If you would like to excercise it, just let me know."
Matt: "I'm good. But thanks."
Grams: "You got some nerve knocking on a Bennett witch's door and asking her for anything."
Damon: "What'd I do?"
Grams: "Spirits talk, Mr. Salvatore. So does my granddaughter. You are no friend to us. Now get off my porch."
Damon: "When do you wanna do this?"
Anna: "God, it's like 1864 all over again. You Salvatores are truly pathetic when it comes to women."
Bonnie: "I'm sorry. For all of this."
Grams: "Not as sorry as they're gonna be."
Elena: "You and I, we have something. An understanding. And I know that my betrayal hurt you, different from how it is with you and Stefan. But I'm promising you this now: I will help you get Katherine back."
Damon: "I wish I could believe you."
Elena (takes off vervain pendant): "Ask me if I'm lying now."
Damon: "Brother. Witches."
Damon: "You knew Katherine wasn't in there."
Anna: "You wouldn't have helped me."
Damon (choking Pearl): "Why do you get a happy ending?"
Anna: "Last I saw her was Chicago. 1983. She knew where you were, Damon. She didn't care."
