Official synopsis

The official synopsis: "Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy are still trying to cope with their grief and move on with their lives. Elena has always been the star student; beautiful, popular and involved with school and friends, but now she finds herself struggling to hide her sadness from the world. As the school year begins, Elena and her friends are fascinated by a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore. Stefan and Elena are immediately drawn to one another, and Elena has no way of knowing that Stefan is a centuries-old vampire, struggling to live peacefully among humans, while his brother Damon is the embodiment of vampire violence and brutality. Now these two vampire brothers - one good, one evil - are at war for Elena’s soul and for the souls of her friends, family and all the residents of the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

Based on the book series by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries is from Alloy Entertainment and Bonanza Productions Inc in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Kevin Williamson (Dawson's Creek, Scream), Julie Plec (Kyle XY, Wasteland), Leslie Morgenstein (Gossip Girl, Privileged) and Bob Levy (Gossip Girl, Privileged). Marcos Siega (Dexter) directed the pilot and several subsequent episode and works as a supervising producer.

Production

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on March 5, 2009, CW Entertainment's president Dawn Ostroff said of The Vampire Diaries: "There are very few shows on the air right now that are truly close-ended; most are open and ongoing. Even procedurals have gotten a little soapier. Each of the shows we have has a different flavor. "Vampire Diaries" is different from anything else. It's more like "Twilight" or a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Each episode has a beginning, middle and end."[1]

The CW confirmed that the TV series was officially being picked up ahead of schedule on May 19, 2009.[2] It debuted on Thursday, September 10, 2009 to record ratings for the network.

On February 16, 2010, the CW officially announced that the TV series was being picked up for a second season.[3]

Atlanta

On May 10th, Kevin Williamson referenced a trip to Georgia for location scouting. This was the first public indication from the production team that the series would not be filming in Vancouver.[4] The series officially started production in Atlanta, Georgia on July 21, 2009.[5]

On February 16, 2010, it was confirmed that the second season would continue to be filmed in Atlanta.[6]
